For the fifth year in a row, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has published the Spanish and French versions of the New Annual Report on Antimicrobial Agents Intended for Use in Animals.
160 countries took part in this fifth round of data collection, a 23% increase in comparison to the first round of data collection. These countries shared detailed information with the of improving and enlarging the OIE global database on antimicrobial agents intended for use in animals. This initiative forms part of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance developed within the tripartite collaboration (OIE, FAO and WHO).
This fifth report provides a regional and global analysis on the use of antimicrobial in animals in the OIE Members and in non-contiguous territories. It also lists the barriers that countries encountered when trying to collect, analyze and present data.
With reference to the Americas region, all the countries and territories invited submitted their replies, and 69% provided quantitative data.
Dr. Luis Barcos, regional representative of the OIE for the Americas region, mentioned about the participation of the countries of the Americas in this new report:
“We are very pleased with the level of participation of the countries of the Americas and the amount of data that they have provided. Their participation is a strong indicator of their commitment to communicating more accurate data and to working on the prudent use of antimicrobials”
The fifth annual report had the highest level of response since its first edition in 2015. The results show a decrease in the use of antimicrobials quantities adjusted by animal biomass, which is a clear indicator of all the OIE regions in the prudent use of antimicrobials.
