Ministerial Commitment to Support the Fight Against African Swine Fever (ASF)

On 1 September 2021, during the Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas 2021, the Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA) issued a resolution in which it recognized the importance of the implementation of national and regional actions and initiatives to prevent and combat ASF in a coordinated and complementary manner, under the umbrella of the GF-TADs.

The Inter-American Board of Agriculture (IABA) is the highest governing body of Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), and it formed by the Ministers of Agriculture of the 34 Member States. Its main role is to lead the discussion about agriculture, to obtain an articulated and coordinated regional policy.

The Board asked Dr. Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA, to identify financial and technical resources to support the development and execution of projects and actions to prevent ASF.

Dr. Luis Barcos, OIE Regional Representative for the Americas, mentioned about this resolution: “The introduction of African swine fever in the Americas region is a big challenge, for which we’ve been working on for several years. The work done by the GF-TADs in collaboration with other international organisms and the governments of each country, is the best tool we count with to stop the spread of this disease”.
